Hello Somerset School Families,

Over the last two days, our teachers have been actively engaging at the 2025 Calgary Teachers' Convention, participating in valuable professional learning aimed at enriching their teaching practices. We’re excited to bring these fresh ideas and strategies back to the classroom, benefiting your child's learning and growth.

Some of the key areas our teachers explored include:

  • enhancing foundational skills in reading, writing, and math, with strategies designed to support early learners in building strong academic foundations.
  • engaging in learning about project-based learning and differentiated instruction to better meet the diverse needs of students.
  • gaining valuable tools to support student mental health and well-being, creating a positive and supportive learning environment.
  • sessions focusing on Indigenous education, deepening understanding of the importance of Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action and how to integrate multiple world views as we forge a common path forward.
  • exploring digital tools to enhance classroom engagement and support student learning.

We look forward to applying these learnings in the classroom, continuing to foster a nurturing and inclusive environment that supports your child's educational journey.

Safety Update

As shared on Wednesday, to support the safety and visibility of the ‘no-parking / no-stopping’ zones in front of our school, we will occasionally place pylons in these areas. This will help prevent families from unintentionally receiving parking violation tickets from the City. Please note, the City has informed us that illegal parking in these zones will result in tickets.  Additionally, to further improve clarity, we will be purchasing signs to better define parking zones and the boundaries between City and school property.

Importance of Parent/Guardian Support for Field Trips

Field trips provide incredibly valuable experiences for our students, offering opportunities for hands-on learning, exploration, and personal growth which cannot be easily replicated in the classroom. However, these enriching experiences would not be possible without the support of our parent/ guardian community. Not only is financial support needed to cover field trip fees, but volunteer support is equally crucial. Volunteering on a field trip can be a truly rewarding experience, allowing you to engage directly with your child’s learning and create lasting memories.

Hand to Heart,

Nathan Bane
