As we dive into the spirit of Halloween, we want to remind you of some key details:

Costume Fun

Students are invited to wear their favorite safe and non-violent costumes to school. Let’s make sure everyone can join in on the fun throughout the day, including during Physical Education!

Costume Guidelines

  • Keep it light—no overly gory or scary themes, please!
  • Avoid any negative stereotypes or anything that might hurtful
  • Students should be easily recognizable, so let’s leave the prop weapons at home—anything brought will be safely held in the office until pick-up.
  • Optional Spirit: Not into costumes? No problem! Students can join the festivities by wearing orange, black, or any color they love with their regular clothes.

Spooktacular Activities

On Thursday, October 31, we will  have organized games during Physical Education, thanks to our amazing School Council, along with lots of fun classroom activities led by our fantastic teachers.

  • Costume Independence: Please choose costumes that are easy for students to manage on their own, especially when it’s time to use the restroom.

Upcoming Week's Updates

  • Tuesday: On October 29 our Grade 4 students will be hosting a Bat Conservation Assmbly

Supporting Students with the School-Wide Problem-Solving Model

At Somerset School, we encourage our students to express their feelings and navigate challenges—both social and academic—using our School-Wide Problem-Solving Model. This framework empowers students to articulate their emotions and needs constructively. Here’s how it works:

I feel [emotional awareness/vocabulary],

When [describe the action/behavior],

I need [suggested action/change].

To help our students effectively use this model, here are some prompts to consider:

  • I feel… when included.
    • What is happening that makes you feel included? (Encourage your child to identify specific behaviors or situations.)
  • How can you express your needs when you feel included? (Guide them in articulating their feelings and needs clearly.)

Sentence Starters

Provide students with sentence starters to help them articulate their feelings, such as:

  • “I feel included when…”
  • “I feel happy because…”

This gives them a clear framework for self-expression.

Encourage Small Steps:

Suggest starting with small interactions, like greeting a classmate or asking a question.

By using these prompts, we can help our students build emotional awareness and develop effective communication skills. Thank you for your support in reinforcing these concepts at home!
