Oki Somerset School,
Thank you to all the families who joined us for our Welcome Back BBQ and Meet the Teacher presentations last week. Your time, energy, and involvement mean so much to our school community. “When families and schools work hand in hand, students thrive.” This week promises to be a busy and exciting one, filled with opportunities to learn, connect, and celebrate together as a school community.
Here are your Weekly Updates:
Toonies for Terry Fox Run | All week
This week, we are inviting students and families to bring in a toonie (or any donation amount) to support the Terry Fox Run. Every coin and every dollar makes a difference in continuing Terry’s dream of funding cancer research.
Let’s see how much Somerset can raise when we all chip in together, small change can create BIG change!
Powwow Mash-Up (Wild-Mint Arts) | Monday, Sept. 22
We thrilled to welcome Powwow Mash-Up to our school this week! This high-energy, educational showcase shares the beauty, athleticism, and diversity of Indigenous dance from the Plains. Students will experience hoop dance, flute, stories, and other powwow styles, all brought to life by Cree, Blackfoot, and Stoney Nakoda dancers from Wild Mint Arts.
The performance is designed to be engaging and interactive, with insightful commentary and time for students to celebrate and ask questions. It’s not every day you get to see such a vibrant mix of music, movement, and culture.
School Photo Day | Wednesday, Sept. 24
Get those smiles ready!
Parents, this is your reminder to check for jelly stains and bedhead before drop-off.
We all know I don't have that problem. 😊
Subway Fun Lunch | Thursday, Sept. 25
*orders closed on Sept. 20
Terry Fox Run | Friday Sept. 26
Families are warmly invited to join us as we continue Terry’s legacy of perseverance and hope. Runners, walkers, and cheerleaders are all welcome
Let’s move together for a great cause!

Field Trips are Coming!
Field Trips Are Coming and we need volunteers to make them a success. The first step is to complete your Annual Volunteer Registration Form. Once that’s done, you’ll be ready to join in the fun and help create memorable experiences for our students!
Upcoming Field Trips| Grades 2, 3 & 4
Out Grade 4 and Grade 2/3 field trips to the Calgary Zoo are approaching quickly. These trips are a wonderful opportunity for students to explore natural systems, plant and animal interactions, and conservation in a hands-on, engaging way.
Grade 4: October 16, 2025
Students will deepen their understanding of Earth and living systems, scientific methods, and matter through journaling, discussions, and conservation projects before, during, and after the trip.
Grade 2/3: October 27, 2025
Students will explore plant and animal growth, interactions, and citizenship, contributing to conservation projects while engaging in conversations, observations, and visual journals.
These experiences tie directly to curricular outcomes in Science and Social Studies, helping students apply their learning in meaningful, real-world contexts. We cannot wait for our students to explore, discover, and make connections at the Zoo!
Annual Volunteer Registration
To keep our students and staff safe, all school volunteers must complete the Annual Volunteer Registration Form, valid for the current school year. This form is required for anyone assisting with curricular or extra-curricular activities, including volunteer drivers and students volunteering outside their own school.
Please note, volunteers do not include guest speakers, presenters, visitors, parents helping only their own children (an attendant), or school council members in their official role.
The information collected is kept strictly confidential and must be completed every year. Thank you for helping us create a safe and welcoming school community!
Fun Lunch | Health Hunger
Don’t miss the fun and tasty Fun Lunch experience, organized by our School Council. It’s a great way for students to enjoy a special meal and families to support our school community.
Please note: Orders must be placed by the Saturday before each Fun Lunch date. Once the cut-off passes, late orders cannot be accepted, so be sure to get your order in on time
We are looking forward to a busy and fun week at Somerset! Students will have the chance to contribute to Toonies for the Terry Fox Run, experience the vibrant Powwow Mash-Up performance, strike their best poses on School Photo Day, enjoy a Subway Fun Lunch, and take part in the Terry Fox Run.
Hand to Heart,
Nathan Bane
Somerset School Principal
